INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY IN E. ZAMYATIN’S NOVEL «WE»

Abstract:
The author attempts to touch upon the problem of relationship between the individual and society not only in the E. Zamyatin’s novel «We» but also in the context of dystopian literature, in particular, in the G. Orwell’s novel «1984» and A. Huxley’s «Brave New World». No doubt that such a comprehensive study will give an additional insight into the specifics of the dystopian genre both in an artistic and expressive aspect and in terms of the aspect of its contents. The chapter «Dystopian Genre in Russian and Foreign Literature» analyzes the genesis and evolution of the dystopian genre in Russian and foreign literature, formulates the main features of the dystopian genre, systematizes and generalizes the points of view of literary critics and philosophers, presents the main aspects of the study of the dystopian genre in modern literary criticism. In the chapter «Man and Unified State» the author studies the novel by E. Zamyatin "We" in terms of relationships between the individual and society, reveals the principles and laws governing the functioning of society based on the suppression of the individual, touches upon the mechanisms of society pressure on the individual. In the chapter «E. Zamyatin’s “We”, G. Orwell’s “1984”, A. Huxley’s “Brave New World”: Similarities and Differences» the writer established connections of E. Zamyatin’s novel «We» with foreign literature, draws parallels, reveals similarities and differences between E. Zamyatin’s «We», G. Orwell’s «1984», A. Huxley’s «Brave New World».
