ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN CULTURAL IDENTITY FORMATION

Abstract:
The article claims that common language is one of the basic premises for the collective identity formation. The essence of the linguistic factor in the process of the national identity construal is analyzed, and the modern strategies of the formation of the common communicative space are highlighted as well as the reasons for the loss of its consolidating capacity. On this ideological background the diversities between the national and cultural identities are explicated and the language proves to be the main premise for the latter’s development. The prior significance of the collective identity in the contemporary globalized society is shown, as well as its role in the political and cultural life of contemporary society.
